Origin

The term Diabetes Mellitus is derived from the Greek and Latin words. Greek word, diabetes means siphon - to pass through whereas the Latin word mellitus means honeyed or sweet. Interpreting Diabetes

Diabetes belongs to a category of a chronic disease. It occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is important for regulation of blood sugar. Raised blood sugar or Hyperglycaemia, is a common ramification of uncontrolled diabetes. · Type-2 diabetes: When the body does not produce or use insulin well, it converts into type 2 diabetes at any age, even during childhood. It is most common in middle-aged and older people

· Gestational diabetes: This condition develops in women when they are pregnant. Most of the time, this type of diabetes goes away after delivering the baby
