A muscle control disorder that is characterized by rigid muscles and tight or an inability to control those muscles is said to be Spasticity. Also, reflexes may persist for too long and maybe very strong. An infant, for example with a hyperactive grasp reflex, may keep their hand in a tight fist.

Causes:
By an imbalance of signals from the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) to the muscles, Spasticity is caused. In people, his imbalance is often found with cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injury.
What Are the Symptoms of Spasticity?
Symptoms include something such as Increased muscle tone, Overactive reflexes, Involuntary movements, which may include spasms, pain, difficulty with care and hygiene, and abnormal posture.
To diagnose spasticity your doctor will evaluate your medical history. They will look at what medicines you have taken and whether you have a history of neurological or muscular disorders in yourself or your family. They may prescribe you with Lioresal which is used to relax muscles and treat spasticity effectively.
Treating Spasticity
Several tests can help confirm the diagnosis. These tests evaluate your leg and arm movements, muscular activity, passive and active range of motion, and ability to perform self-care activities.
Treatment for spasticity may include medicines such as Lioresal. Physical therapy and Occupational programs, involving muscle stretching and range of motion exercises, and sometimes they use of braces, may help prevent tendon shortening. To decrease or stabilize the severity of symptoms Rehabilitation also may help to improve functional performance.
General injections of onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox) and abobotulinumtoxinA (Dysport), for the treatment of upper and lower limb spasticity. But they are also known to have serious possible side effects including difficulty breathing, swallowing, or spreading to other areas of the body. Deep brain stimulation is also being studied as a treatment when these other measures fail to bring great relief. Surgery may be recommended to implant a baclofen pump, tendon release, to cut the nerve-muscle pathway. Also, treatment with Lioresal is very helpful for Spasticity.
