A Peptic Ulcer is a type of disease that involves the stomach or duodenum. Gastric and duodenal ulcers are difficult to differentiate based on history alone. Epigastric pain is a common sign of both types of ulcers.

There are some alarming signs of an uncomplicated peptic ulcer that include bleeding, anemia, early satiety, unexplained weight loss, progressive dysphagia or odynophagia, vomiting, and family history of gastrointestinal cancer.


Causes

The condition of Peptic Ulcers is occurred when acid in the digestive tract gets away at the inner surface of the stomach or small intestine. The acid can lead to a painful and open sore that may bleed.

The digestive tract is coated with a mucous layer that normally protects against acid. Ulcer can be developed due to increased amount of acid is or decreased amount of mucus.

Common Causes Include:

It is mainly caused due to a bacterium named Helicobacter pylori. It commonly lives in the mucous layer of the stomach or intestine. It covers and protects tissues that line the stomach and small intestine. It leads to the inflammation of the stomach's inner layer, producing an ulcer.


Risk Factors

Some factors may increase the risk of peptic ulcers. These factors are mentioned below:

  • Smoking: Frequent smoking may increase the risk of peptic ulcers in people who are infected with H. pylori

  • Consumption of alcohol: Drinking alcohol can irritate and erode the mucous lining of the stomach that increases the amount of stomach acid

  • Stress: Increased and untreated stress may also increase the chance of getting Peptic Ulcer

  • Intake of spicy foods: Spicy food cannot cause ulcers but it can worsen the condition if consumed after infection

Lifestyle And Home Remedies

It is always better to expend the time or effort to be cautious about lifestyle and eating habits than to feel regret later. There are some effective home remedies to prevent Peptic Ulcers as mentioned below:

  • Healthy diet: Always have a healthy diet full of fruits, mostly with vitamins A and C, vegetables, and whole grains

  • Choose foods containing probiotics: Foods like yogurt, aged cheeses, miso, and sauerkraut contains probiotics that are beneficial for health

  • Use pain killers: Pain relievers can be useful in this condition but ask the doctor before using it regularly

  • Control stress: Stress should be controlled while suffering from Peptic Ulcer. Sometimes stress is unavoidable, but it can be coped up with performing exercise or other options

  • Avoid smoking: Excessive smoking affects the stomach that makes it more prone to the development of an ulcer

  • Avoid alcohol: Drinking excessive alcohol can irritate and erode the mucous lining in the stomach or intestines that cause inflammation and bleeding

  • Get enough sleep: Enough sleep can help the immune system to counter the stress

  • Eliminating milk: Milk will make ulcer pain better, but it exceeds acid in the stomach, which increases the pain
