One of the world’s leading infectious disease is Pneumonia that kills number of children under 5 years. Though it is easily preventable and treatable. On 12th November the “World Pneumonia Day” is celebrated to raise awareness of the health condition. It also promotes interventions that protect against the condition, prevent and treat it. The world should generate action for combatting deadly childhood diseases like Pneumonia.

As per the researched data 73 poorest countries in the world between 2011 and 2020 could save more than 2.9 million lives, prevent 52 million cases of illness, and save $51 USD billion in treatment costs and productivity loses. Easy measures like decrease in indoor air pollution, providing clean water, sanitation, and implementing hygiene interventions can be helpful for prevention of the condition.

World famous victims of the condition include Nelson Mandela, Chuck Berry, and Fred Astaire. The common denominator for their death is this monster disease. Nelson Mandela contracted the disease at the age 95, who was unable to recover. Chuck Berry, the grandfather of Rock and Roll had a pneumonia just before his death at the age of 90. Fred Astaire, the renowned dancer, singer, and actor died at the age of 88 due to such issue. Others includes Freddy Mercury and Calamity Jane who died at the age of 45 and 51 respectively with the same cause.

The list of deaths due to this evil disease is much longer and many unidentified people including children. Every year a million of children across the globe die due to pneumonia before being 5 years old. Their life ends even before they start living.

The condition affects the lungs that causes inflammation of the lung sacs. It gets filled with fluid. It shows symptoms such as cough, fever, chills, and breathing problems. It may vary from mild to severe. It becomes severe in people who are vulnerable.

Young kids are especially prone to pneumonia. Children have weak immune system rather it is not fully developed. It is unable to fight against the prime bacteria of the condition i.e. Streptococcus pneumoniae. So, it is also common in people with weakened immune system or with a poor nutritional status due to poverty.
